How to Select Perfect Inverter or UPS – VGuard Inverter FAQ

Q 1. What is a Digital UPS (Digital Uninterrupted Power Supply)/Home UPS? How does it differ from a normal Inverter?

A digital UPS is nothing but the combination of a UPS and an Inverter. In a normal inverter, you can only connect your electrical loads like lights, fans etc. If you try to connect your computer to an inverter during power failure, the computer may get rebooted and there is no voltage protection in that case. But in case of a Home UPS/DUPS, you have two provisions

(a) Normal mode
(b) UPS mode

Both can be selected by an external switch.
By selecting the UPS mode, you will get an extremely safe change over with a safe range of voltage protection and your computer will not even blink. So, you can run your computer safely along with your other lighting loads.

Q 2. How should I select the right capacity Digital UPS (DUPS)?

For selecting the right DUPS capacity, you have to list out all the equipment you want your DUPS to support. Add the power rating of all these equipment and based on that, you can select the best sized Digital UPS.

For example, you need to connect 4 Tube lights, 2 Fans and 1 TV with your Digital UPS. In this case, the expected watt consumption of the items will be:

Tube Light = Approximately 40W
CFL = Approximately 15W
Fan = 80W Maximum
TV = 100W Maximum

Summing up the wattage of all of the above will give us around 420W and it can be safely supported by a 600 Volt-Ampere (VA) Home UPS which is the very next size of inverter (i.e. 70 % of the Given VA).

V-Guard provides you a flexible range of UPS Inverters which can cater to a wide range of needs.

Q 3. What will happen if I overload my Digital UPS?

A V-Guard Digital UPS is completely protected against the variations in the load level. If you try overloading the unit, it will attempt re starting 5 times so that you can reduce the load in between. If the load remains the same after 5 re-starts, then the unit will shut down automatically. In case of any short circuit, your home UPS will sense it immediately and the unit will switch off immediately.

Q 4. Can all my appliances and electrical goods work 100% correctly on your Digital UPS units?

Yes, V-Guard makes the latest DSP technology based Digital UPS which ensures that you get continuous power as long as the unit is allowed to function within the specified unit capabilities.

Q 5. What are the major differences between Sine wave and Square wave DUPS?

The names Square wave and Sine wave are related to the shape of the output provided by a Digital UPS. Our normal electrical power will always provide a Sine wave supply, which is recommended for all types of electrical appliances. A Sine wave Digital UPS will provide a pure Sine wave output similar to our electricity board supply. But this type of Digital UPS is superior to Square wave since the circuits and components used for such type of a Digital UPS are a little more sophisticated.

The output wave form in square wave digital UPS will not be a pure Sine wave and because of this reason some devices may not work smoothly when running on a Square wave UPS.

Now, along with its Sine Wave Home UPSs, V-Guard brings you the latest technology in Square wave UPS to make it a Pseudo Sine wave which will have a reduced rate of interference in its output.

Q 6. Can I use the Digital UPS for any medical instruments?

The V-Guard DUPS is not designed for any medical equipment and we don’t guarantee that it will be able to provide support for them seamlessly. For such equipment, please find DUPS’ that are rated and tested for such equipment.

Q 7. What are the draw backs of a square wave DUPS?

A modified square wave UPS will have a more harmonic interference as compared to a Sine wave UPS. This might not be compatible with certain kind of electrical equipment. For example, connecting some fans to a square wave DUPS can produce some noise while a Sine wave DUPS will perform silently. Most of the home equipment like Computers, Motor Driven appliances, Refrigerators, Printers, TVs, most stereos etc. will work smoothly even with a square wave Digital UPS. But appliances like digital clocks, some battery chargers, light dimmers and the likes, will not be compatible with this type of Digital UPSs.

Q 8. How vital is the role of a battery while selecting the right DUPS?

The battery is almost like the heart of a DUPS. No matter how efficient your Digital UPS is, a wrong battery selection can change its entire performance. A good quality battery with proper Ah capacity will provide you with an uninterrupted power flow for a longer duration. Since 60% of your investment belongs to the battery, a vigilant selection is a must.

Q 9. What maintenance does my Digital UPS require?

V-Guard Digital UPS doesn’t require any maintenance for its functioning. The unit automatically recharges the batteries when power is restored via an in-built intelligent charging circuit. Our high quality deep cycle batteries are ready for a long run without any problem. But for proper working of the batteries you are requested to top up the battery water from time to time.

Q 10. How long can I run the Digital UPS on old batteries?

The back-up time of the Digital UPS purely depends up on the AH of the battery and the load connected to it. For example, a 600 VA Digital UPS with 150 AH battery will run for approximately 2 hours with full load on while it will run for 2 days without any problem if the load is only 15W.The backup will depend on the aging of the battery.

Q 11. How important is the charging current of the Digital UPS for the life of the batteries?

The charging current is the prime factor which affects the life of a battery. After a long discharge, the battery should be charged fully with proper voltage and current for a healthy and long life. For proper charging of the batteries, the recommended charging current must be a maximum of 10% of the AH of the battery. V-Guard Digital UPS provides you with an intelligent charging circuit which senses the battery condition and pumps the required amount of current to keep the battery healthy. It gives an optional range of 8 – 16 A so that it can be connected to a wide range of batteries without any problem.

Q 12. Can I use the square wave DUPS for computers and LCD TVs?

Yes, the V-Guard square wave DUPS is designed to support computers and LCD TVs. Your Computers and LCD TVs will run without any problem on our Square wave Home UPS.

Q 13. Will the power go back to line while in backup mode?

No, the power will never go back to line. The V-GUARD UPS has a protection to block the output power to return back to the mains in backup mode.

Q 14.Which type of battery can I use with the Digital UPS?

The Digital UPS batteries are supposed to withstand deep discharge cycles during its usage. So we recommend using Tubular batteries with V-Guard Home UPS. You can choose from our wide range of capacities with optimum quality.

Q 15. What do you mean by a dedicated wiring for Digital UPS? Is it mandatory to have a separate wiring for Digital UPS line?

Your Digital UPS is not supposed to be connected to the main supply line in your house. Instead it is recommended to have a separate line for the devices which are connected through the Digital UPS. On this dedicated line, please avoid the connections of power equipment like AC, which is larger than the capacity of your Digital UPS. We recommend using a dedicated wiring for your Digital UPS to ensure complaint free functioning and break free power feeding to your valuable equipment.

Q 16.What do I do if I have a complaint regarding my Digital UPS?

In case of an issue, kindly refer your user manual/warranty card. Our intelligent audio and visual indication will help you find out the status of your Digital UPS as it is described in the manual. Some issues can be solved by you as it’s described in the warranty card. You can also tell our engineers the status of your Digital UPS by referring to the user instructions so the restof it will be taken care of.

For any other complaints, our efficient service network is ready to serve you over a phone call. V-Guard brings you the largest service network all over the country to keep you smiling always.
